How do I know that Clear is going to live up to its promises?

We are committed to the total transparency and accountability when it comes to protecting your privacy and fulfilling the commitments that we have made to our members. To prove it, we have implemented tough checks on our system including: the Clear Identity Theft Warranty, the Independent Privacy and Security Audit, and the Independent Privacy Ombudsman.

What is the "Clear Identity Theft Warranty™?"

The Clear Identity Theft Warranty is an unprecedented commitment that we make to our members. We know that identity theft is so much on people's minds lately - and we believe we have security and privacy measures in place to prevent the limited data we collect from being used for identity theft. Clear commits to all members that in the highly unlikely event that you are the victim of identity theft that is the result of any unauthorized dissemination by Clear, or theft from Clear, of your personal data collected by Clear, we will reimburse you for any otherwise unreimbursable monetary costs directly resulting from such identity theft. In addition, Clear will offer at its own expense assistance to any such member in restoring the integrity of the member's financial or other accounts.

What is the Independent Privacy Ombudsman?

Reviewing the details of member privacy complaints objectively, impartially, and in a timely manner is important to us. Therefore, we have appointed an independent, outside Privacy Ombudsman.

Law Professor Paul Schwartz, noted privacy expert and advocate, is empowered to investigate all privacy complaints, gather the facts, and respond to members, as well as to post responses publicly and prominently on our website. He will also provide Clear's management with recommendations for resolving disputes in keeping with our Privacy promises.

If you have a complaint about our privacy practices, please contact Professor Paul Schwartz. You can email Professor Paul Schwartz or write him at:

What if I am a victim of identity theft?

If you are a victim of identity theft, you should visit the Federal Trade Commission's identity theft website. If you think that you have been a victim of identity theft as a result of any action by Clear or any of its subcontractors, notify Clear's Chief Privacy Officer.

Can the card be copied or read by someone else?

Only card readers authorized by the Clear security team can decrypt and access the biometric and biographic information on the card. A second layer of encryption has been applied to the information as well so that even if someone gains access, it does not reveal any personal information.

Is my data safe?

Your information security is one of our top priorities. We have a wide array of security features to protect your privacy, confidentiality, and data-security rights. For instance, we purge Social Security Numbers once we transmit them to the Transportation Security Administration as part of the security screening process. Our solution makes extensive use of access control and encrypted communications. All platforms that maintain sensitive data include token-based and biometric access control. We encrypt authentication messages and wrap them using Message Authentication Codes (MACs). We use Virtual Private Networks (VPN) to encrypt data and tunnel through the Internet, and provide all necessary firewalls and secure communications protocols. Our team has extensive experience and processes in place for handling Security Sensitive Information for the Department of Homeland Security, including TSA, Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the Department of Defense and other government agencies.

Couldn't a terrorist get a card?

The Transportation Security Administration determines who may participate in Clear. It conducts a Security Threat Assessment of all applicants, which sharply reduces the chances of anyone who is a known threat getting a card. The whole idea behind Clear is to spend less security time and money on those who have been screened in advance than on those who have not. But that does not mean that all people who go through the TSA screening won't some day commit criminal acts. That is why all members of Clear still have to go through the metal detector and their baggage must go through the X-ray screener.

Can you fake someone's biometric?

The idea behind biometrics is that your biometric identifier - be it a fingerprint or an iris image - is unique to you.

Is Verified ID P3P compliant?

At this time, Verified ID has not implemented P3P. (The "Platform for Privacy Preferences" is an Internet standard that theoretically allows browsers, such as Microsoft's IE6, to interpret website privacy policies.)
